Ford then made the top loader all synchro 3 speed. It was also used by GM in a few cars. Next was the Toploader 4 speed/ It had all the gears inside the main case. The heavy duty top loaders had the 1 3/8 input shaft. the O/d 4 speed changed gear internals so 3 rd gear was direct and the od used the gears that was 3 rd in former designs.

Jul 12, 2019 · I've never seen those ratios in any research on the 3.03 transmission. I6 cars go the 277 3 speed. Mayeb that's what you have. They are "top loaders", but they are not the same top loaders. The 3.03 was only behind 240/300, SBF and FE's. Maybe behind 429's. Not sure.

Jun 15, 2011 · The previous owner replaced the 2.77 3 speed manual with the heavier duty 3.03 3 speed manual. I need the nylon speedometer drive gear that mounts on the tail shaft. Mustang parts suppliers do not carry this gear. From what I can determine the nylon gear has 7 teeth. I believe that the Ford part number is C3OZ-17285-C but I am not positive.

Feb 20, 2006 · Toploader OD is the same dimensions as the regular toploader and will interchange with it as well as the 3.03 3 speed. Tailshafts interchange between the same tranmission types (different shifter locations), but not between types (not even betwen the toploader OD and classic).

Jun 06, 2018 · So far I have determined the 3 speed I have in my 65 wagon is a Top Loader 3.03 HEF BJ. I think the ratio for 1st is maybe 2.98 or 2.99??? Around 3.00 any way. What I have found on the Top Loader 4 speeds is that they basically were 3 speeds with 4th as an OD. With 1st gear in the 2.32 to the 3.29 area.

You want to make sure your 4-speed Toploader has a 14-inch tailhousing with the rearmost mounting holes for the shifter to avoid having to use an adapter plate.
